Little Frank
Reaching Wisenhousen, Ralf followed the instruction Bernd was giving via 2m radio. At the junction, a little boy with bright blooming face was standing, waiting excitedly. He then ran in front of the car, led to his house. That was cute little Frank, the only son of Bernd and Claudia. Frank was the most excited in the house. He had sacrificed his room for the auntie from Thailand.
The house was lovely and pretty. Claudia was very good housewife. She took care of the house and everyone nicely. Opa and Oma, Bernd’s parents lived on the second floor or I should say that their live on the ground floor and Bernd’s house was underground. But the underground was the ground floor with back yard.
How could I paint it out by words. If you park on the road in front of the house, the door would open to Opa and Oma’s house. The road was a kind like being on the small hill side. But if you make a turn to the house area, the road would slope down to the garage and the front of Bernd’s house..
Behind the house was a yard with a beautiful Cherry tree. Bernd had what he called ‘Winter Garden’ a glass room extended from the house to the back yard. The room had sensor roof that would slide out to protect the glass roof when the temperature was too high, too low or too wet.
In the winter garden, a large banner was placed, “Swaddee krab, Thida, HS1ASC” and Frank was so excited to see my reaction when seeing it. How lovely.
We were sitting, talking in the winter Garden and little Frank was jumping around. The sun was still strong, about 30 degree from the earth. Claudia told her son that it was over his bed time. I had a question mark on my face.
“Why must he sleep so early?”
“He had to go to school tomorrow”
“But why to sleepy this early”
Claudia looked at me..
“It is already 10 pm.”
“WHAT !? 10 PM.?”
They pointed to the clock and laughed.
My goodness!! It would be only 4 pm. this kind of light in my country.
Little Frank said goodnight to me.
“Gutten Nacht”
“Gutten Nackt” I replied, repeated him.
Claudia and Bernd were laughing like anything. For quite some time before they could take their breath. Claudia said to me that what I had pronounced meant Good naked, not good night. It must be “nak he te” not “ nak ke te”
Little Frank had fun showing me this and that. Wisenhousen was famous for the sweetest Cherry. Beside Bernd’s house was Cherry farm. Every tree was full of dark red luscious Cherry. It was very nice.
We went to many nice places. Frank happily led me to a cable car to get on the top of the hill that was full of wild flowers. We sat on a slider car to slide down the hill, through the wild flowers. That was really lovely.
We also went to another hill in the eastern Germany, got on the steam preserved train up on the hill. There was a pile of parts of ‘Berlin Wall’ which was barbed wire. Frank tried to teach me some German. He thought for awhile then gave me my first lesson.
“Frank es hungrig" meant Frank is hungry.
We all laughed. “He is hungry all day.” said Claudia
Frank is now a handsome young man, working in Stuttgart.
Bei Mir Funk
Bernd brought me to visit DARC publishing house and DARC itself. The manager, Wilfred, explained and showed me the wonderful system and arrangement of DARC. There was hams from Verguta, Kumi republic, who came to Germany by train. We became good friends. Wilfred was a kind of serious officer. Most of the office boys and girls were afraid of him. Bernd said that he smiled the most that day. When he gave me DARC posters, books and stickers. One of the stickers printed “Bei Mir Funk” He laughingly said something to Bernd that made all the ladies in the office looked at him with big eyes. Bernd laughed.
He told me later that the “Bei Mir Funk” was playing with word. ‘ Bei mir’ meant ‘with me’ and ‘funk’ meant ‘radio’. But actually it was the phase use when a man told a lady he wanted to marry her. He gave the sticker to me in both meaning.. No wonder everyone was surprised with his merriment.
